In 2012, UHS Hospitals (UHS) partnered with NexCore Group to develop an integrated outpatient center in the Town of Vestal, a suburb of Binghamton, NY. The project called for strategic planning, innovative programming, and creative design solutions to improve access to services in an underserved market, implement a new market standard in the delivery of services, and strengthen the UHS brand. The project was multifaceted in scope, with a range of challenges requiring a full-service team of specialists. The NexCore team secured speed to market for UHS and delivered the first comprehensive neighborhood outpatient facility in New York’s Southern Tier.

Understanding the need for patient-centered care, the NexCore team dedicated three months early in the project to strategic planning and programming. Building on feedback from physicians, patient surveys, and focus groups, the NexCore team created a unique and highly efficient layout for the facility. The team was able to eliminate excess space, reduce costs, and enhance the delivery of patient care by incorporating elements such as centralized check-in/check-out, shared provider work areas, strategically placed nursing stations, custom designed desks in exam rooms, and main lobby with coffee bistro, fireplace, lounge areas, and grand staircase that creates “residential warmth”.

According to UHS CEO Matt Salanger, all business line volumes in the facility have exceeded projections. The Vestal walk-in center is also busier than any other UHS walk-in location. The system’s overall pharmacy numbers also grew at a rate of 14% only four months after the Vestal pharmacy opened its doors.

UHS re-engaged NexCore to develop an Orthopedic Center adjacent to the Vestal Physician Office Building, which opened in August of 2016.
